Local Services Ads: How Google Verified Leads Work

Local Services Ads: How Google Verified Leads Work

Local Services Ads: How Google Verified Leads Work

Quick answer

Local Services Ads charge per lead, such as a call or message, not per click. Since October 2025, one Google Verified badge has replaced Google Guaranteed and Google Screened. Google credits invalid leads automatically, but not leads for services or areas you don't cover. Ranking depends on reviews, responsiveness, location, hours and budget.

Search "plumber near me" or "injury lawyer Miami" and the first thing you see is often not a regular ad. It is a row of businesses with a blue Google Verified check, star ratings and a call button. Those are Local Services Ads. They work differently from search ads: you pay for leads, not clicks, and Google decides who shows.

This guide explains how Local Services Ads (LSAs) work in 2026: the Google Verified badge, how leads are charged and credited, what decides ranking, and what to do once a lead arrives. Several parts changed in the last two years, so older advice is often wrong. Put plainly: LSAs reward verified businesses that answer fast and collect good reviews.

Google changes LSA rules, categories and pricing often. Check the current details in Google's Local Services help center before you change your setup.

What Local Services Ads are

Ads at the top of local searches. LSAs appear above regular search ads for many local service searches. They show your business name, rating, review count, hours and the Google Verified badge.

Pay per lead. You pay when a potential customer calls, messages or books through the ad, not when they click. That makes LSAs feel closer to buying leads than buying traffic.

Google picks who shows. You don't write ad copy or choose keywords. Google matches searches to your service categories and decides which businesses appear and in what order.

Category and city matter. LSAs are available for home services, legal, real estate, financial and some other categories. Availability depends on the category and the market.

A separate system from search ads. LSAs have their own account, budget and reports, even though they appear in the same results as your Google Ads campaigns.

The Google Verified badge

One badge since October 2025. On October 20, 2025, Google replaced Google Guaranteed, Google Screened and License Verified by Google with a single Google Verified badge (Google Local Services help).

The money-back guarantee is gone. The guarantee that came with Google Guaranteed was discontinued with the change.

What the checks can include. Depending on your category: business registration, licenses, insurance and background checks on the owner or staff. Lawyers, for example, are checked against bar records.

Update your own wording. If your site, ads or brochures still say "Google Guaranteed" or "Google Screened," change them to "Google Verified." Old badge names now look out of date and can mislead.

Keep documents current. An expired license or insurance policy can cost you the badge, and with it your ads.

What you need to run LSAs

A verified Google Business Profile. Since November 2024, a linked, verified profile has been required. Your reviews, hours and service area come from it, so its accuracy matters. Profile basics are covered in Google Business Profile for Miami practices.

Clean service settings. Choose only the job types and areas you serve. These settings decide which leads you receive and which ones Google will credit.

Business hours you can staff. Ads run during the hours you set. Set hours you can answer, not the hours you wish you could.

A weekly budget. You set a weekly amount, and Google spends it on leads during that week. You can also choose how bids are set.

How leads are charged and credited

You're charged for valid leads. A call, message or booking request from a potential customer counts as a lead.

Credits are automatic now. Since July 2024, Google reviews every lead and credits invalid ones, such as spam or wrong numbers, on its own (how automated credits work). You can no longer file manual disputes.

Some leads are no longer credited. Google stopped crediting leads for job types you don't offer or areas you don't serve. If your settings are too broad, you pay for those leads.

Rate your leads anyway. Rating each lead in the account gives Google feedback on quality. It doesn't guarantee a credit, but it is the only lever left.

Read cost per lead with care. The price per lead is the input. What matters is the cost per booked job or signed case, which depends on how many leads you answer and convert.

What decides your ranking

Reviews. Your rating and how many reviews you have. Steady, recent reviews help more than a burst once a year.

Responsiveness. How reliably you answer calls and messages. Google's own help pages say missed calls can count against you.

Location. How close you are to the person searching, and whether they are inside your service area.

Hours. Whether you are open when the search happens.

Profile quality and complaints. A complete, accurate profile helps. Serious complaints can hurt.

Budget and bids. Spending more doesn't buy the top spot outright, but too small a budget limits how often you appear.

Answering is part of the ad

Every missed call costs twice. You may still pay for the lead, and your ranking can slip. A missed call is a lost job and a weaker ad tomorrow.

Answer fast, at any hour you run ads. The rules from speed to lead apply with extra force here, because the customer is looking at your competitors in the same row.

Handle messages too. Message leads need a reply in minutes, not at the end of the day.

After-hours options. Either set hours you can staff, or set up intake that answers every lead and books the visit, as in every lead answered in seconds.

Qualify quickly. Find out within the first minute whether it is a job you do, in an area you serve. Then book it or send them to the right place.

LSAs alongside search ads

They do different jobs. LSAs capture people ready to call a nearby business now. Search ads let you control the message, the landing page and the keywords, including searches LSAs don't cover.

Most local businesses run both. LSAs for direct calls, search ads for broader and higher-value searches, with a shared budget view.

Avoid wasted overlap. Keep your search ads focused on terms and services where they add something, and use a strong negative-keyword list so the two don't compete for the same junk.

For law firms. Legal LSAs have their own checks and some of the highest lead prices in the program. The specifics for injury firms are covered in Miami personal injury Local Services Ads.

The numbers that matter

Cost per lead. What Google charges, by job type.

Answer rate. The share of calls answered live, by hour and day.

Booked rate. The share of leads that became a booked job, consult or signed case.

Cost per booked job. Spend divided by booked jobs. This is the number that matters.

Credits received. How many leads Google credited each month, and whether that changes after you tighten settings.

Review growth. New reviews per month and your average rating.

Revenue from LSAs. Jobs traced back to the lead, with the method in attribution across every channel.

Frequently asked questions

How do Local Services Ads charge?

Per lead, such as a call, message or booking request from a potential customer, not per click. You set a weekly budget, and Google charges for valid leads within it. Invalid leads like spam and wrong numbers are credited automatically.

What replaced Google Screened and Google Guaranteed?

A single Google Verified badge, since October 20, 2025. It replaced Google Guaranteed, Google Screened and License Verified by Google, and the money-back guarantee was discontinued. Update any old badge wording on your site and ads.

Can we still dispute bad leads?

Not manually. Since July 2024, Google reviews every lead and credits invalid ones automatically. It no longer credits leads for job types or areas you don't serve, so keep those settings tight and rate each lead in your account.

What decides LSA ranking?

Reviews, responsiveness, your location relative to the searcher, business hours, profile quality and budget. Google says missed calls can affect responsiveness, so answering every lead is part of ranking well.

Do we need a Google Business Profile?

Yes. Since November 2024, a linked, verified Google Business Profile has been required to run Local Services Ads. Your reviews, hours and service area come from it.

Should we run LSAs and search ads together?

Most local businesses do. LSAs capture people ready to call a nearby business now, while search ads give you control over keywords, messages and landing pages. Use a shared budget view and negative keywords to avoid wasted overlap.
